Der Main-Donau-Kanal und seine Bedeutung für Österreichs Güterverkehr

Abstract

Der nunmehr fertiggestellte Main-Donau-Kanal eröffnet für Österreich und die östlichen Donaustaaten eine ununterbrochene Schiffahrtsverbindung mit den bevölkerungsreichen Industriegebieten an Main und Rhein und den leistungsfähigen Welthäfen Rotterdam, Amsterdam und Antwerpen. Die potentielle Nachfrage für Massengütertransporte auf dieser Verkehrsrelation erreicht bereits jetzt fast zwei Drittel der Kapazität des Kanals. Wieviel an Transporten effektiv von Lkw und Bahn auf die Schiffahrt abwandern wird, hängt nicht nur von der Leistungsfähigkeit der Binnenschiffahrt, sondern auch vom Ausbau der oberen Donau ab. Bislang können die Schiffe auf den freifließenden Flußabschnitten bei Niederwasser nicht voll beladen werden, zeitweilig muß der Betrieb unterbrochen werden. Das verteuert die Schiffahrt und macht sie unpünktlich.
