Abstract

Die Regelung des Agrarhandels wurde zu einer Schlüsselfrage der Uruguay-Runde des GATT. Die USA drängen auf eine weitgehende Öffnung der Märkte und einen substantiellen Abbau der Agrarprotektion. Die Westeuropäer unter Führung der EG zögern, weil sie schwere Probleme für ihre Bauern fürchten. Auch die österreichische Landwirtschaft wäre vom Abbau des Agrarschutzes betroffen. Ein Kompromiß ist noch nicht in Sicht, ein Scheitern der Verhandlungen an der Agrarfrage ist aber nicht wahrscheinlich. Es ist zu erwarten, daß die Uruguay-Runde die Sonderstellung der Landwirtschaft im Welthandel einschränken wird. Mehr internationaler Wettbewerb und verstärkter Anpassungsdruck für die westeuropäischen Bauern wären die Folge.
