The urban informal sector: Working children in the streets of metropolitan Merida

Abstract

En este trabajo se muestran algunos de los aspectos socioeconómicos más importantes que conforman la problemática de los trabajadores menores de edad en el Área Metropolitana de Mérida. La pobreza de sus familias es el signo común que los une y de donde proviene la necesidad de participar con el ingreso de sus labores al precario salario del grupo familiar, para garantizar así la subsistencia la mayoría de las veces de 7 u 8 personas. Las consecuencias posibles apuntan hacia la salud física y emocional del niño, sujeto diariamente a una jornada de 5 o 6 horas de trabajo, para asistir posteriormente a la escuela, generalmente mal alimentado y con la constante amenaza de sucumbir ante la delincuencia, las drogas o la prostitución, tal como sucede en Caracas, Bogotá o Río de Janeiro.
