Sistema bancario privado uruguayo: un estudio de sus costos

Abstract

Este trabajo se centra en el estudio de la estructura bancaria privada uruguaya entre 1989-1993. Dada la característica multiproductiva de la firma bancaria, se estima una función translogarítmica para costos operativos en base a un modelo panel con efectos fijos individuales, calculándose economías de escala, de alcance y cambio técnico. El trabajo demuestra la inexistencia de economías de escala para todas las clases de firmas bancarias definidas por el número de empleados. Sin embargo, por encontrar retornos constantes en las firmas chicas, éstas se presentan como las de tamaño óptimo. Los resultados sobre las economías de escala, unidos a la concavidad de la función, indican la ausencia de monopolio natural. Respecto a las economías de alcance, no se encuentran complementariedades entre productos, excepto en los bancos grandes donde es altamente significativa la existente entre los servicios y los préstamos bancarios. Dos aproximaciones de cambio técnico son usadas para el promedio de la muestra
