Abstract

This article critically examines central aspects of John Roemer's work in the context of rational choice Marxism and argues that it represents an extreme version of this form of Marxism. Substantive propositions of Roemer's theories are compared to those of Karl Marx, and the similarities are stressed. But, it is claimed, Marx's methodology is in various respects superior to that of Roemer. In particular, methodological individualism is a defective method for constructing Marxian theory, and J. Elster's and Roemer's defenses of it are unconvincing. Copyright 1989 by Taylor and Francis Group
