Abstract

MALECKI E. J. and BRADBURY S. L. (1992) R&D facilities and professional labour: labour force dynamics in high technology, Reg. Studies 26, 123--136. The recent decentralization trend among research and development (R&D) laboratories has been attributed in part to firms following the locational preferences of their professional and technical workers to attractive areas. This paper examines the locational decisions and preferences of both R&D facilities and their professional employees. The findings suggest that the location of R&D facilities is influenced by the labour market dynamics of professional workers. Quality of life and city size are significant locational considerations both to professional workers and to firms that conduct R&D. These results demonstrate and reinforce the benefits of agglomeration economies associated with large urban areas for corporate location.
