Abstract

BLACKABY D. H. and MANNING D. N. (1990) Earnings, unemployment and the regional employment structure in Britain, Reg. Studies 24, 529--535. This paper investigates the effect of regional unemployment on regional earnings in Britain. Data are obtained from the New Earnings Survey reports from 1970 to 1986 and the influence of the regional industrial and occupational structure is taken into account. In general, the results support the hypothesis that increases in regional unemployment, relative to the national average, are associated with decreases in regional earnings below that expected.
