Abstract

HARRIS R. I. D. (1988) Technological change and regional development in the UK; evidence from the SPRU database on innovations, Reg. Studies 22, 361--374. This paper makes use of a unique data source--the SPRU survey of significant innovations--to show the overwhelming dominance of the South East region in terms of its innovative activities over the period 1945--83. It has also been possible to highlight the effect of industrial structure on innovativeness on the move, over time, towards proportionately more innovations being developed in plants that are externally owned, with an associated loss in the share of innovations coming from the peripheral regions of the UK, and the relative dependence of the peripheral regions on process innovations.
