Abstract

CONGDON P. (1988) The interdependence of geographic migration with job and housing mobility in London, Reg. Studies 22, 81--93. A multinomial logit model is developed to analyse the association between residential migration within and from London with employment and tenure mobility. Migration is shown to interact more strongly with tenure change than career shifts, and with changes of workplace as against changes in occupation in general. The selectivity of migration in terms of age and income partly reflects such interactions, implying biased estimates of selectivity in single equation migration models. While occupational mobility and job-linked migration are higher among lower income workers, they are positively related to educational resources, confirming human capital models of job search. However, gender and ethnic differentials in occupational and tenurial migration suggest segmentation of housing and labour markets.
