Abstract

ANTONELLI C. (1987) The determinants of the distribution of innovative activity in a metropolitan area: the case of Turin, Reg. Studies 21, 85--94. Regional concentration of research and development (R & D) activities and innovation capacity reaches highest Italian values in the province of Turin. The study analyses the pattern of spatial distribution of innovative activity within the province of Turin, as measured by the locational intensity of patenting firms to total firms. Results of the econometric analysis suggest that innovative activity within the metropolitan area is higher in towns which are further away from the Central Business District, where employment is lower in tertiary activities and higher in capital intensive plants, where there are R & D laboratories, as well as engineering, chemical and electronic industries. Economic interpretation of the results suggests that such a mix of regional backwash and metropolitan spillover may be a distinctive feature of high technology intensive areas.
