Abstract

Medium enterprises have largely remained invisible in scholastic inquiries, indicating a sectoral vacuum between the small and large sectors. In an attempt to understand the dynamics of the firms in this 'missing middle' in Kenya, the authors of this paper have developed a framework of analysis, the main components of which are the entrepreneurial profile, operating characteristics of the firm, stages of the growth of the enterprise and the strategies used at each of these stages.
