Existe-t-il une prime salariale à l’innovation?

Abstract

Since the eighties, wage inequalities have dramatically widened to the benefit of skilled workforce. The rapid diffusion of information technologies constitutes a major candidate for explaining this evolution. Empirical evidence has established the existence of a wage premium for the new technology users but no consensus has been achieved about its origin. Is this premium attributable to a higher productivity due to the use of new technologies or, instead, to non observable competencies? Analyzing the modes of estimation helps in answering this question. Depuis les années quatre-vingt, l’accroissement des inégalités salariales a bénéficié à la main-d’oeuvre la plus qualifiée. L’accélération de la diffusion des technologies de l’information constitue une des explications majeures de ce phénomène. Les études empiriques convergent pour établir l’existence d’une prime salariale pour les utilisateurs de nouvelles technologies mais s’opposent quant à son origine. S’agit-il de la rémunération d’un surcroît de productivité lié à l’usage de ces technologies ou bien de la rémunération de compétences supérieures non directement observables? Une réflexion sur les méthodes d’estimation permet de donner des éléments de réponse à cette question.
