Abstract

ABSTRACT This paper uses the 2003 Survey on Individuals Opinion on Rurality and Agriculture in Andalusia (Agrobarometre 2003) to investigate individuals attitudes and perceptions towards different attributes of multifunctional agriculture. Results indicate that individuals in Andalusia are aware of the multi-dimensional nature of agriculture as a provider of private (food and non-food products) and public (employment generation and environmental protection) goods. This achievement seems to be adjusted to a postmaterialist view of agricultural sector in modern societies. A wider diversity has been found regarding public perceptions towards how Andalusian agricultural sector performs the different functions. Gaining a better understanding on individuals attitudes and perceptions on multifunctional agriculture will be of particular relevance to decision-makers and policy-makers as it could help to raise awareness about the issues faced in defining agriculture, and ultimately contribute agricultural policy evaluation and development.
