Abstract

[eng] This article reviews the principle results of an inquiry on home communications, conducted in 1987 for France-Télécom. It concerns financial budgets and household schedules for different communication activities : reading, the press, telephone, radio, television, records, videorecorder, minitel and computers. The French typically spend about 25% of their time at home using one or more of these media. The time spent on each depends mainly on the profession, the age and the sex of the consumer. Each activity is analysed with special attention to television, which alone accounts for half of the time reserved for the use of these media. The examination of financial budgets shows that the greatest expenditure on equipment and consumption is not necessarily by the richest social groups. The rapid development of new technolo gies suggests the progressive integration in everyday life of an increasingly large selection of communication products and services.
