Abstract

[eng] The birth of the english methodenstreit : the Harrison-Cairnes controversy. In this paper, we intend to recall the impact of the Methodenstreit which shook Great-Britain during the last three decades of the nineteenth century. We suggest that this battle of method originated in the controversy between Harrison and Cairnes. First, we present Harrison's point of view and impute it to Comte's influence. Then, we analyze Cairnes's epistemological and methodological assesments. We show that he hardened the views developped in Mill's System of Logic [1843], thus reasserting the value of the methodological rules expounded in the Essay [1836].
