Abstract

[fre] Mainstream industrial organization and « new » schools . . [eng] Mainstream industrial organization and « new schools ». . Since 1970 three « new IO theory » schools have emerged : (1) neo-Chicago-UCLA analysis, focusing on « efficient structure » hypotheses, (2) « contestability » theory, an extreme case within the wider study of entry and barriers, and (3) coumot-Nash modelling of duopolies and strategic actions. This paper assesses them in relation to the mainstream study of industrial organization, noting significant flaws and weaknesses, along with strengths. « New IO theory » is currently a separate body of analysis, but it may be assimilated into the mainstream if it can develop testable forms. The first two schools also need to address and cure logical inconsistencies among their basic assumptions.
