Abstract

[eng] This study shows how to determine both the optimal quantities and timings of an investment policy. It gives the general optimality conditions for both continuous and discrete investments. The factors which determine them are the demand as a function of time, investment costs, possible constraints on investment, interest rates, and other costs such as those of current inputs, of externalities (in particular congestion) or of deficiency to serve the demand. These optimality conditions are then applied to several instances of discrete investment, the optimal sequences of which are explicitly calculated.
