How can one understand the past and present organization of human societies without knowing about the instrument that permits this organization — the human nervous system ? How can one understand the action of man who destroys the biosphere, without knowing the mechanisms that lead to the competitive aggressivity of his behaviour all over the world ? The writer, after having outlined the structure and the integrated functions of the human nervous system, shows how they have led to the construction of physics and technology by concealing the unconscious impulse towards domination at all levels under a humanist argument institutionalizing the principle of the survival of the strongest. He tries to determine how the species can escape this blind pressure of necessity.
