Abstract

[eng] The research enquiries, the results of which are presented in this article, was intended to contribute towards an explanation of the varied nature of the reactions of rural communes affected by migration. A thorough enquiry was made in two villages which had, from the statistical point of view, identical characteristics and, therefore, appeared to be in a similar position. . The psycho-sociological analysis reveals that the « social climate » and the possibilities of survival of the two villages are, in fact, totally different: whereas Neuville is a dynamic commune, Verrières is dwindling away. The discovery of close links between a series of attitudes and varieties of conduct, and the collective nature of the behaviours observed reveal lhat the « social health » of the community plays an essential part. The enquiries shows, moreover, that it is the particular conjunction of certain objective factors (climate, homes, crop system, communications) which in each case serves as the basis of a particular structuration of the sociological and psycho-sociological reality.
