Abstract

[eng] Versatility of the « American Model » and the Fluctuations of the Dollar . Despite innumerable economic models, the US dollar fluctuations remain partially mysterious. Its ample variations are testimony of successive periods of euphoria and suspicion, both probably excessive. Isn't it tempting to ask « what is wrong with the market ? » when €1 buys $ 0.88 in 2001 and $ 1.6 in 2008 ? The theme of this article has been suggested by the editors. Its goal is to connect the dollar's fluctuations with the perception of the « American model ». This reference proves useful to enlighten evolutions which cannot be fully captured by a simple equation. Its conclusions are particularly timely since the euro has turned as a credible choice for international investors at a time when the future of this « American model » under a new administration fuels lots of speculation. . .
