Abstract

[eng] The slow transformation of German banks . Hard hit by the collapse of the equity markets and the strong surge in domestic and international risks in 2002-2003, German banks swung back into positive net incomes in 2004 and 2005 thanks to efforts to curb operating costs and the easing of risk charges. Although German banks benefited from the economic recovery and equity market rally in 2006 and in the first half-year of 2007, their performances still lag behind those of their European counterparts. The German banking sector continues to suffer from structural shortcomings such as feeble operating revenues and the segmentation of market shares, which, exacerbated by a sluggish lending cycle and foreign competition, are straining growth prospects. The financial turbulences of the summer 2007 could boost the reorganization of the German banking landscape. . . Classification JEL : G21, G34
