Abstract

. Classification JEL : F36, G21, G34 [eng] What role for British banks in the restructuring of European banking ? . Since the beginning of the 1990s, the dynamics of the European banking systems have been determined by the same major trends : liberalization, consolidation, and internationalization. At the same time, European banking has remained fragmented and characterized by large national disparities. Until the present most mergers and acquisitions have taken place on a national level. Cross-border operations have been relatively scarce. But the offer made by the Spanish bank SCH for Abbey may well announce the beginning of a shift in the restructuring of European banking. What might be the role of British banks within this framework ? They are certainly highly profitable and have nowhere left to expand on a national level. Thus, the question may be posed as to whether they will make moves outside the UK and if so, where ? Or will they themselves be targeted by foreign banks, and in that case, which ? .
