Abstract

[eng] South-East Asia Emerging Markets : a tight rein on take-off . South-East Asia stock-exchanges capitalisation has been multiplied by 6 in ten years and at the end of 1996 it represented 400 billion US dollars. These markets, having different sizes according to countries, show similar characteristics : overrepresentation among issuers in banking and real estate sectors, business concentration. . Their incomplete development shows why the impact of investors' loss of confidence has had spectacular repercussions on capitalisation and performance since the beginning of the year. Great umbalances between an enormous share market as compared to the bond market, scant market liquidity and insufficient infrastructures have made them vulnerable and amplified the effects of the first withdrawal movements.. The recovery of these markets, thanks to a better foreign actors' integration, remains one of the priorities as regards the harmonious development in that region.
