Abstract

[eng] Standards are an essential piece for markets to work efficiently in a changing environment. They provide to enterprises and consumers information which reduces transaction costs, contribute to the diffusion of technological knowledge and make easier the choice among technical alternatives. On the otherhand, they can be used as strategic variables to limit competitive pressure and increase market share. In this paper, we look at the variables that affect the decision for a firm to take part in the standardisation process using two original samples of French Industrial firms: a sample of 873 companies and a sub-sample of 120 enterprises listed on the Paris Stock Exchange. Our results show that the standardisation process may be loosing some of its properties of a consensual achievement in favour of a more strategic implication of large firms.
