Abstract

[eng] We focus this paper on the relationship between demand growth and R&D expenditures in the perpectives opened up by Schmookler (1996). We try to quantify the effects of economic activity on R&D expenditures funded and realised by industrial firms. We used the OECD database for seven countries (France, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands, Spain, UK and the USA) and 16 sectors over an extended period of time (1975 to 1996). We estimated the effects on demand/R&D expenditures elasticities with correction error models. The main finding of this analysis is the confirmation of the existence of a short-term effect of economie growth on the amount of business R&D. This effect is stronger at the level of manufacturing (the industry as a whole) than at the sectoral level.
