Abstract

[eng] Studying imperial peripheries helps to better understand the Empire itself and to grasp the various strata of interdependence and autonomy which it is made up of. Defining the periphery entails taking a closer look at the different possible definitions of the Holy Roman Empire and of its spatial extension. Imperial Italy is a good example: it cannot be found in all institutions of the Empire (e.g. the Diet) but on the other hand, it illustrates the subsistence of feudal bounds up to the end of the modern period — notwithstanding chronological fluctuations and differences among Italian territories. Besides, Italy makes it possible to study the complex relationship between the Habsburgs' dynastic interests and their obligations as Emperors. The article introduces these variations before presenting the «irregularities» that are inherent in a non-homogeneous imperial space.
