Abstract

[eng] Abstract From the end of the 1960s to the creation of the euro, the official US position on European monetary unification has always been supportive. Yet this support has limits. American opinion has always favoured trade liberalisation as well as defence and security cooperation between Western European countries, but it has never displayed enthusiasm toward the goal of a common European currency. The European Economic and Monetary Union is an ambitious endeavour, based on political as well as economic interests, and there has been no unified American reaction to the creation of the euro.
