Abstract

[eng] Abstract Political circumstances — such as a ruler's disability or absence, wanted or not — often meant delegation of power to a regent. Regencies are troubled times for ongoing monarchies. They appeared to be « safety valves » and induced liberalism or triggered absolutist reaction. Regencies of kings under age allowed queen mothers to rule, particularly in countries such as France not prone to allow women a political influence.
