Abstract

[eng] Abstract Several recent studies have called into question the concept of «micromobility» as applied to French rural areas of past centuries, and argued for the high mobility of the local population. Against thes claims, the present article shows that rural population remained characteristically rooted to its soil until the late 19th century, and that mobility, if any, was on the small scale. It points out the weaknesses of the analyses which call for a rereading of the evidence, and it emphasises that having firm roots does not necessarily imply living in a closed culture. A synthesis of far-ranging research, it aims at setting a methodological example.
