Abstract

[eng] Abstract Fear played a determining role in politico-religious commitments offrench cities during the wars of religion. Under its influence, the town of Grenoble decided not to grant its allegiance to Henri IV, September 29 1589. Fear of losing its soul, eschatological fear related to a divine retribution, fear of losing its municipal privileges and its prosperity were indeed the foundations of the city's commitment to the League. Trusting in their judgement and the patronage of the holy archangel Michel, the burghers of Grenoble believed, they had solved all their problems in one fell swoop. An radicaly different attitude from that of the king's supporters.
