Abstract

[eng] Absract The latter half of the sixteenth century in France calls to mind a period of bloody civils wars. The very idea of prosperity would appear out of place. Nevertheless, towards the end of the 1570s, the « golden years » of the sixteenth century were not over for everyone. Ennemond Perroct, a draper based in Grenoble, enjoyed a lucrative spell during this period. Close by the Dauphine parliament, his shop supplied members of both the nobility and middle classes with a variety of luxuries very much in demand. In spite of the geographical limitations of the area, his accounts reveal a steady rise in his fortunes thanks to the considerable trading activity which surrounded his business.
