Abstract

[eng] Abstract This article discusses the importance of business leadership as an explanatory factor of economic performance in the three major European economies - Britain, France and Germany - in the twentieth century. Particular attention is given to three measures of the quality of business management : the persistence of family control, levels and types of education, profession- nal experience before reaching a top managerial position. The article rejects the alleged superiority of the « German model » and questions the relevance of the concept of « national culture »for the study of business performance.
