Abstract

[eng] Abstract This article examines the rise of associations catering for retailers in Italy between the 1880s and the First World War. This rise was primarily a consequence of changes in the urban political economy following franchise expansion in this decade. Because the pace of transformation in the distribution sector was comparatively slow, retailer protests were primarily directed against those operators seen to be unfairly advantaged by fiscal 'privileges ' (cooperatives, travelling and temporary traders), rather than the application of new retailing principles (department stores, chain retailing). This facilitated retailer co-operation with those engaged in large-scale enterprise, but this was not indicative of retailer weakness, as has been argued. Rather retailers exploited their numerical weight which made them an important grouping within the Liberal state.
