Abstract

[eng] Abstract Although very confined by the regulations of their respective orders, the missionaries of New Spain in the XVIth Century were very much a product of their time. However, it should come as no surprise that their religious background and evangelical mission were stronger than their classical culture as regards their approach to the American problem. The works by Acosta, Durán and Sahagún evoked herewithin are highly representative of the humanist strain evident in Spain and the New World a little while after the Conquest.
