Abstract

[eng] Abstract From 1780 until the Restoration, Jean-Baptiste Bureau has increased his business in various fields. The political events certainly disturbed it but didn't destroy it. He succeeded in managing for a while several ironworks in Burgundy, together with the trade of pig iron and wrough iron, a transport compagny on the Saone river and in sitting up, with some associates, the compagny of the Messageries nationales. Every time, he used to take care of the circumstances-as the abolition of the feudal tolls-and he adjusted himself to the particular features of a job-the revival of the plant of Le Creusot or the right management of the forest near Château-Chinon. He also withdraw, his assets just in time, from banking, in 1793 or from Le Creusot compagny, in 1809, when these businesses had become hazardous ones. Resisting the investments into real estate, he worked through the dark years as a manufacturer and wholesaler, knowing how to make money even during the bad business cycles.
