Abstract

[eng] Abstract In October 1635, Claude Saumaise, at that time professor in the Leyden's Academy, sends a letter to Nicolas-Claude Fabri de Peiresc. Frederick-Henry of Nassau, says he, has expressed the wish that he - Saumaise - could write a treatise on the roman army's organization. The stathouder hoping he could discover in the classical literature some instructions he could use for the organization of his own army. Peiresc starts now his quest of relevant documents ; particularly the manuscripts of the «byzantine strategists». This long-drawn research, which can be followed through the correspondance between the two scholars exemplifies the difficult conditions prevailing for the research activities in the early seventeenth century.
