Abstract

[eng] Abstract Various wars and crises brought about a development of charitable institutions. Traditional setups, inherited from previous centuries, were widely used, but were penetrated with a new spirit, which was linked to the catholic reformation. Still thought of as a way of living one's faith and of gaining salvation, acts of charity were henceforth coupled with a missionary spirit. This raised few fundamental questions : How should the «deserving» poor be sorted out ? What part should a State preoccupied witth public order play ? How far should laymen be integrated to Church institutions ?
