Abstract

[eng] Abstract After Henri de Guise's death (december 1588), Antoine de Saint- Paul, one of his clients, took the lead of the leagued nobility in Champagne. In spite of his humble rank, he tried to federate behind him all the groups that were hostile to the king of France. His ascension, his means of action and his image in the propaganda of the League allow to understand better the original place of certain nobles during the last period of the religious wars. The contesting of his authority and his final failure throw into relief the social and mental obstacles in a unanimous engagement of the nobility behind a leader devoid of any hierarchical legitimacy.
