Abstract

[eng] Abstract Though manifold as far as their activities, modes of living and relations with the neighbouring towns and countryside are concerned, XVIIth & XVIIIth century French seamen from the North Sea and easrern Channel shores fall within common patterns which enable us to single them out and outline their attitudes. This is the reason why our assessment of the maritime social framework shall revolve around for main themes, namely the sea, war, time and God. Each accounting in its own way for the destiny of thousands of men and of their families.
