Abstract

[eng] 1974-1988 : The Stagnation of the Farmers Income - Farmers Income did not grow as fast as it had during the sixties. In the 1974-1988 period, the gross income per farm remained relatively stable in inflation-adjusted francs. After 1974, farmers suffered from the increase in the price of petroleum products. The cost of the goods consumed on farms rose faster than that of farme products. The unfavourable evolution of prices canceled the gains resulting from both a drop in farmers purchases and an increase in their sales. . From 1970 to 1988, the taxes paid by farmers increased twice as fast as their sales. In addition, as early as 1984, the European Community decided to penalise surplus production, such as milk and cereals, whose cost had become too high for the Community's finances. Public authorities and the EEC gave subsidies, but they were not sufficient to make up for the drop in farmers income.
