Abstract

[eng] Over the Last Two Years the Average Age of French Cars has Decreased - Between 1972 and 1988, the number of cars rose by 80 %: this was caused by an increase in the number of households and also by the fact that they owned more equipment. Notably, more and more households owned two cars. The average age of cars became older. The ageing of cars was partially explained by the growth of the second hand market. In addition, when households bought a new car, they tended to keep it longer. . Compact cars and family cars constituted an increasing proportion of the total. On the contrary, low-priced and expensively-priced cars receded. Foreign cars appeared on the French market, particularly after 1 980. In 1 988, they constituted more than a quarter of the total number of cars. For two years, the growth of the total number of cars has been slowing down and their average age has decreased. . The proportion of second hand cars is receding. The market for up-market cars is recovering and, on the contrary, the drop in the sales of down- market cars is increasing as the French supply in this category has disappeared.
