Abstract

[eng] Réunion : an economic on stilts - In Réunion, the social security benefits and the number of civil servants are not higher than the national norms. However, social contributions and withheld taxes on the Reunionese cover social benefits and administrative cost only partially. The difference is made up by home country subsidies which represent more than a third of available household income. . These subsidies permit a high level of consumption in relation to the island's own resources. But they do not directly help in resolving its main problem, unemployment. At present, more than a third of the working population is affected by unemployment. The situation may become worse in the coming years since numerous young Reunionese will be entering the work market.
