Abstract

[eng] The Strong and Weak Points of Industrial Foreign Trade - With the exception of raw materials, the foreign trade balance of France shows a surplus in the area of industrial goods. The deficits with developed countries are more than compensated for by the surpluses with the Eastern European nations, and the oil-producing and developing countries. In France, there is no sharp contrast between certain high-surplus branches of the economy and others having large deficits. Most branches combine a certain number of strong and weak points. The strengths tend to be found in the activities dominated by a few large firms, which concern a relatively large amount of highly skilled labor. The production system, however, shows a low level of concentration in the production areas which display weak points. The regaining of the domestic market for these products will have to take into account the fact that a large number of firms will be involved. From 1973 to 1981, the industrial surplus grew rapidly, mostly due to a two-fold price effect. First, there was generalized inflation which swelled a balance which was already positive; newt, this trend was further increased by the higher rate of growth of French prices, to the detriment of competitiveness, especially on the domestic market. The continuing increase in domestic demand, unlike that of France's partners, is yet another factor which explains the poor foreign trade results of 1982.
