Abstract

[eng] New Illegitimate Children and their Parents - In 1981, roughly 100,000 children were born of unmarried mothers. While from 1960 to 1965 such cases represented only 6% of yearly births, the percentage began to grow at a rapid rate from 1967 and reached over 10% in 1979, and represented approximately one birth out of 9 in 1981. Illegitimate children are more and more frequently born among intellectuals, office workers, and non-working women. They are becoming rarer in certain categories in which, in the past, this phenomenon was not exceptional: household staff, agricultural workers and apprentices. Regional differences, however, remain along traditional lines: few births outside of marriage in Brittany, in the regions of the Loire, or the Massif Central, a large number, however, in Paris, Normandy, Picardy, in the North and the North East, and a sizeable increase in Languedoc- Roussillon. This increase in the birthrate outside of marriage is accompanied by a widespread tendency on the part of fathers to recognize an illegitimate child from birth.
