Abstract

[eng] Retailing from 1968 to 1978 - Through the use of the series established in conjunction with the implementation of the new system of national accounts (SECN), the INSEE has traced the main trends within the retail sector between 1968 and 1978. Large supermarkets totaled 18.4 % of the retail turnover as compared with 4.2 % in 1968. The tendency has been for food retailers to diversify their sales in the direction of everyday nonfood items (detergent, toilet articles). On the other hand, the changes within non-food retailing have been less sweeping. Overall, retailing has created 95,000 jobs between 1968 and 1978, while the labor productivity has increased by 3.6 %, although the productivity of the fixed assets has decreased by 1.4 % yearly. During the same period, the costs (intermediary consumption and labor costs) have tended to become more and more burdensome on the books of retailers. The profits of corporations were greater than those of individually owned businesses.
