Abstract

[eng] A special study completed by the INSEE in October of 1977 estimated the totality of vacant housing in France at approximately a million units in urban areas. Of these, roughly 9 out of 10 are intended as normal housing; these are designated as ordinary vacant housing. This article attempts to examine their basic characteristics. The major conclusions reached are that 10 % are new, of which more than two-thirds are available, that is, either for sale or for rent. On the other hand, only 40 % of older vacant housing (which represents 90 % of the total) is available. Vacant housing is more common in smaller cities and is usually old and lacking of basic comforts. Of available housing, units for rent appear to be newer and more comfortable that the units for sale. In conclusion, there are signs that suggest that there may be an easing of the situation of the housing market.
