Abstract

[eng] French people's holidays - Since 1964, the National Statistical Institute (INSEE) has carried out, each year, a survey on Holidays. From 1964 until 1977, the proportion of Frenchmen who went on holidays rose from 44 % to 53 %; during that period, the winter vacations rose from 15 % to 29 %. However, it should be remarked that there was a drop in departures from 1976 to 1977, a situation that was last seen in 1968. Liberal professions, executives and middle ranking executives as well as salaried employees go on holidays more than the average; inactive persons as well as farming workers go much less than the average. Worker households and middle ranking executive households were the most effected by the drop in departures in 1977. The length of holidays per person has not been changed over these past thirteen years; it is about 30 days, which are spent more and more at the seaside in the summer or in the mountains in winter and less and less in relatives or friends'homes.
