Abstract

[eng] The french industry in 1970 Sustained growth: and maintained competitiveness by Alain Desrosières and Claude Malhomme . For the french industry, 1970 was a year of return to order after two years marked by the shocks of 1968, exceptional growth, the devaluation of the franc and major structural reorganization in industry. This return to order involved a temporary slowing down in growth, but at a high level of activity. . At the beginning of 1970, production was mainly sustained by external demand, stimulated by devaluation and by the demand for capital goods. The middle of the year witnessed a slight slowing down in industrial activity before the resumption of household consumption and the relaxation of economic policy enabled production, at the beginning of the following winter, to regain a growth rate in the neighbourhood of 7 % per annum. . Prices and wages rise fast, as in all Western countries, but this rise seems slightly less marked in France, which indicates that the competitive advantages gained since devaluation are not being lost. This maintained competitiveness may continue over the next few years, since industrial firms continued in 1970 the equipment effort started in 1968 and 1969. This effort is even more marked in the export industries, which is a good omen for the continued competitiveness of the french industry in the medium term. . The labour force increased by 2.2 % in 1969 and 2.3 % in 1970, whereas it had fallen between 1965 and 1968. This growth, however, masks regional and sectoral disparities.
