Abstract

[eng] In parallel with the tendency towards concentration in time, holidays are tending to concentrate in space. Between 1965 and 1968, 50 % of the days of holiday in France were spent in 16 of the 89 Départements, only 1 of which, Haute-Savoie, is not a coastal Département. The 30 Départements with the biggest holiday attendance, which in 1965 represented 65 % of the days of holiday, represented 69% in 1968. The development of summer holidays is likely to affect some thirty Départements only and an absolute decline in attendance is to be expected in the others. . This phenomenon arises out of the growing taste for seaside holidays, and the slow, but progressive, disinclination to spend holidays with family or friends. Holiday makers seem to prefer to fix the kind of holidays they will take before considering where they will go. . One consequence of the present state of affairs is that the cost of holiday services is rising, resulting in a slower increase in the numbers of departures than would be expected from the increase in incomes.
