The Beginnings of Collectivization in Czechoslovakia

Abstract

The contribution is an attempt at a critical and slightly ironical perspective on the turning point of the agricultural policy of the Communist party of Czechoslovakia (KSČ) which occurred shortly after the coup in February 1948. Under the crucial influence of the Informbyro rezolution on the Communist party of Yugoslavia the KSČ abandoned its post-war promises that Czechoslovakia would follow its own path to socialism without establishing dictatorship of the proletariat, without introducing kolkhoz type of farms and while preserving private farming. However, the Communist party incompetent decision in the end of 1948 led to the contrary: it opened space for adoption of a Stalinist collectivization of agriculture, for liquidation of prospering farming estates and for decline of small scale private agricultural production.
